Something to scream about on the Day of Silence.
Homosexuality is a mental health disorder. It was understood as such until 1973 when the American Psychiatric Association (APA) decided to declassify it as a mental health disorder. Since then many attempts have been made by the Left to claim that homosexuality is just another form of sexual expression worthy of praise. The Left has a tendency to deny truth and reality, so no one should be surprised by these attempts.
However, in May of 2001 at a meeting of the APA Dr. Robert L. Spitzer, who had spearheaded the APA’s 1973 decision, released the results of his research, concluding that his findings “show some people can change from gay to straight, and we ought to acknowledge that.”
In the spirit of Dr. Spitzer’s reversal of opinion and in honor of the annual celebration of GAYpril, here are a few myths and facts about homosexuality and the homosexual lifestyle, so anyone can decide if it can be considered normal or indeed pathological.
The first myth holds that homosexuals make up 10% of the entire population. This myth is based on a misquoting from Alfred Kinsey’s book (Sexual Behavior of the Human Male). The precise quote actually states “10 percent of the males are more or less exclusively homosexual for at least three years between the ages of 16 and 55, but that only four percent were exclusively homosexual throughout their lives, after the onset of adolescence.”
In addition to this misquote, it is important to know that Kinsey did not randomly choose his subjects. Rather he purposefully used prison inmates, known sex offenders, and prostitutes as his subjects, most of whom engage in homosexual behavior much more frequently than individuals in the general population. Contrary to Kinsey’s quackery, the authoritative study on sexuality in America (National Health and Social Life Survey) found that only 2.8 percent of the men and 1.4 percent of the women said they thought of themselves as homosexual or bisexual. The truth matters here. The reason homosexual activists are inflating these numbers is to make the general public believe that homosexuality is “normal”.
The second myth holds that people are born gay. This fallacy dates back to an article that appeared in the journal Science in 1993. In this article the author, Dean Hamer, claimed that science was “on the verge of proving that homosexuality is innate, genetic and therefore unchangeable—a normal variant of human nature.” The truth is that there is no credible evidence that there is a gay gene. Rather research indicates that homosexuality could be best explained by an alternative model where “temperamental and personality traits interact with the familial and social milieu as the individual’s sexuality emerges.”
The third myth claims that homosexual relationships are no different that heterosexual ones. If one compares heterosexual and homosexual relationships it will be evident that homosexual relationships lack the fundamental characteristics of heterosexual relationships; namely the complementary nature (both physical and emotional) of the opposite sexes. It is also obvious that homosexual relationships are infertile, because the participants cannot engage in reproduction.
In addition, homosexual male relations are rarely monogamous and the partners risk life-threatening diseases. In the Journal of Sex Research a study of the sexual profiles of 2,583 older homosexuals found that only 2.7 percent claimed to have had sex with one partner only. Research elsewhere indicated that only a few homosexual relationships last longer than two years, with many men reporting hundreds of lifetime partners.” The Lambda Report in 1998 found that 24 percent of gay men had over 100 partners, 43 percent of gay men had over 500 partners, and 28 percent of gay men had over 1000 partners!
As a consequence of this rampant promiscuity, AIDS remains the fifth leading cause of death in the 26 to 44 age-bracket, and 60 percent of new cases are contracted by men who have sex with men. Despite the twenty-year “safe-sex” campaign, the incidence of unsafe sexual practices resulting in various diseases is on the rise. An estimated 30 percent of all 20-year-old homosexual men will be HIV positive or dead by the age of 30.
The fourth myth holds that homosexuals are normal, healthy, and everyday people. The truth is that they are not. Research indicates that those engaging in the homosexual lifestyle are at a substantially higher risk for some forms of emotional problems, including suicidal tendencies, major depression and anxiety disorder, behavioral disorder and nicotine dependence. For instance, one twin study found that men with same-sex partners are 6.5 times as likely as their heterosexual co-twins to attempt suicide. Another study found that a substantial percentage of gay males and lesbians report some participation in illegal drug use.
The fifth myth claims that the Bible does not condemn homosexuality, just promiscuity. It is always amusing when the Left tries to use the Bible or Church teachings to their advantage. Inevitably during these discourses they always reveal their absolute benightedness on these topics. Of course they accommodate for similarly benighted people, so no one notices. The truth is that in Leviticus 18:22, in the Gospel by Matthew (Mt 19:4), and in St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans (Rm 1:24-27) the Bible clearly condemns homosexual acts.
The sixth myth holds that lesbian relationships are healthier than male homosexual relationships. The truth is that most lesbians (about two-thirds of women surveyed) have also engaged in sexual activity with men within the last five years. Sexually transmitted disease rates for bisexually active women are as much as twice that of those who engage in exclusively lesbian activity.
In addition, studies have also shown that a significant number of lesbians engage in other risky behaviors which increase risks of other diseases, such as drug use and exchanging sex for drugs and money. According to another study lesbians may have higher rates of breast and ovarian cancer because of a variety of risk factors like null parity (never having borne a child), childbearing later in life, higher rates of alcohol consumption, and obesity.
Domestic violence does not spare homosexuals either: according to the report by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs domestic violence is as common in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender relationships as it is in heterosexual relationships.
The seventh myth claims that homosexuality is unchangeable. This is one of the most damaging myths about the homosexual lifestyle. Again Dr. Spitzer disagrees: “Like most psychiatrists I thought that homosexual behavior could be resisted—but that no one could really change their sexual orientation. I now believe that’s untrue—some people can and do change.”
To his surprise, a healthy heterosexual functioning was achieved by 67 percent of men who had rarely or never felt any opposite-sex attraction before the change process. “Contrary to conventional wisdom, some highly motivated individuals, using a variety of change efforts, can make substantial change in multiple indicators of sexual orientation and achieve good heterosexual functioning. I’m convinced from the people I have interviewed, that for many of them, they have made substantial changes toward becoming heterosexual . . . I think that’s news . . . I came to this study skeptical, I now claim that these changes can be sustained.” Dr. Spitzer is not alone: other professionals report a 50 to 70% success-rate in the treatment of unwanted homosexual attraction.
Individuals who willingly participated in counseling sessions with an Exodus International Member Ministry have discovered that Jesus Christ is sufficient to make the difference. Is homosexuality unchangeable? Hardly. There is plenty of evidence to the contrary.

By: Cornell American enthusiast on 04/17/2005 at 8:08 PMThe science is real. His doctorate is real. Your bias is real.
The only desecration going on is the shameless and hateful attack on natural law and morality carried out by the LGBTQ folks.

By: Cornell American enthusiast on 04/21/2005 at 9:16 PMI do, in fact, want to ban divorce.
The sanctity of marriage is threatened not only by divorce, but by changing the definition of marriage into one based on any supposedly committed "love" between two persons.
Limited government does not imply libertarianism.

By: Cornell American enthusiast on 04/21/2005 at 10:14 PMOkay, say you ban divorce in the religious sense, such that someone married in a Catholic (just for example) Church who gets divorced is unable to remarry within the church? Or ban divorce as in the case of two atheists who get married in front of a judge at a courthouse?
On the latter point, say you "ban" divorce. What does that mean?
Re: The Straight Facts: GAYpril Mythbusters
By: attackpenguin on 04/22/2005 at 11:15 AM2) While the existence of a "gay gene" has neither been proved or disproved studies have been done that show if one identical twin is gay the other has a much higher chance of being gay. This correlation points to some part of sexuality being influenced by genetics. However, even had that not existed the point still remains that homosexuality is not a conscious choice regardless of if it has any genetic influence. It is no difference than my preference for vanilla over chocolate.
3a) No one is claiming that they are exactly the same as hetero couples. However, you have not made the case that one couple is better and another. To do so you have to interject your own morals and you then commit the fallacy of begging the question.
3b) While gay culture tends to be more promiscuous than hetero culture you have not shown a causal relationship between the actual sexual preference and their promiscuity, merely that their culture more readily accepts it.
4) Again, you have not shown a causal relationship between being gay and being depressed. What you have shown is that being in a homophobic society, surrounded by bigots such as yourself, gay men can get depressed, somehow I'm not surprised.
5) Homosexual acts are condemned but not the state of being gay. Being gay is seen not as a sin but as a test to overcome. However, the real point here is are you seriously trying to make an argument with the bible as your source?
6) Does this point even have a point?

Quotes from Dr. Spitzer
"Our sample was self-selected from people who already claimed they had made some change. We don't know how common that kind of change is. . . . I'm not saying that this can be easily done, or that most homosexuals who want to change can make this kind of change. I suspect it's quite unusual."
"I suspect the vast majority of gay people would be unable to alter by much a firmly established homosexual orientation."
"...the kinds of changes my subjects reported are highly unlikely to be available to the vast majority [of gays and lesbians]... "[only] a small minority -- perhaps 3% -- might have a "malleable" sexual orientation." He expressed a concern that his study results were being "twisted by the Christian right."
Moreover, the idea of changing ones sexuality only makes sense if one can support the claim that homosexuality is less desirable which you have not.
Please go back and rewrite your paper, its logic is dismal. Grade: F

If you heard over and over believing unquestionably in the bible was a mental illness that led to unhealthy life choices and a dangerous obsession with other peoples private lives... I think, given time, and the properr amount of angry people telling you this during your childhood development, you would be more prone to emotional problems and suicidal tendencies. Your ignorance is saddening to me. Pay attention to your own life, take care of the people in your immediate life and get on with life your own life...

This is hate-speech. Pure and simple.
By: Cornell American enthusiast on 04/17/2005 at 6:05 PMPropagating utter nonsense under the guise of a Ph.D. is an insult to science, and a desecration of the civil rights of LGBTQ folks.
To the staff of the Cornell American: Why do you continue to let this person spew hate speech? At least most of the other stuff on this site is well thought out and argued (even if i disagree with the interpretations). However, "Dr." Nagy (and believe me, I use the prefix "Dr" here in an ironic sense) is pushing an anti-gay, hate-filled agenda under the guise of science. This is not journalism, nor is it "fair and balanced" critique of the cultural landscape of the US.
